| Visitor Comments: Hi Keith, my Dad, Sid Dobing is one of the earliest entries on your website. As he stated, he survived the sinking of the Mashona. His memory is amazing and has many stories of his time serving in both the British and Candian navies. He is 87 years old, still enjoys good health and lives in Victoria BC Canada. Do you have knowledge of any other living survivor? By the way, how's the book coming along?- Lynne Stewart |

John according to Mother's memory was with the HMS Mashona when it was torpedoed and sank during the Bismark operation. He survived the sinking spending 5 hours in the water before being rescued. Mum was born in June 20, 1922; and John was October 19, 1919. John Venning died May 19th 1945 in Hamburg while with a friend who found a gun and was accidentaly shot and killed by his friend. He was 24.
Thank you for this great resource of infromation about the history of my Uncle's time on HMS Mashona.

| Visitor Comments: I did my National Service in Rhodesia, as a CPO instructor to the Rhodesia Sea Cadet Corps (RSCC).
The training site was at the Drill Hall in Salisbury and known as TS Mashona, named after HMS Mashona.
In about 196o Rear Admiral Selby, the captain of HMS Nashona when she sank, visited TS Mashona and presented the unit with the White Ensign flown at the time of sinking. That flag is now laid up in the Anglican Cathedral, Salisbury (now Harare, Zimbabwe).
The last CO of TS Mashona was Lt Ray Hignell, now resident in Sydney, Australia. He received the ensign from Rear Admiral Selby.
I had a crest for HMS Mashona, with the motto "Chisarayi", meaning "go in peace". |

| Visitor Comments: As my brothers entry (No22), our dad (who lived in Ilkley) survived the sinking and was mentioned in dispatches. I have the certificate which reads.... By the Kings Order the name of A/Petty Officer Arthur Henry Ray, HMS Mashona was published in the London Gazette on 23rd September 1941 as mentioned in a dispatch for distinguished service. I am charged to record His Majesty's high appreciation. The certificate is signed A V Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty. Dad would be well pleased with the Mashona web site. |
