Visitor Comments: Hello Mr Gurnhill,
I was a pupil at Heanor Grammar school from 1969-1974 and was taught maths by you for part of that time (can't remember exactly how long, my memory is'nt that good). I would'nt like to embarrass you with too much praise, but it has to be said that I found you to be a very good teacher - thankyou very much for your efforts. (Consequently I managed to get a degree in Civil Engineering, despite my academic limitations). Not only were you a good teacher, you also had a good sense of humour, which reflected in your teaching methods. In fact you must be something of a legend in the Heanor area, as I recently came across an earlier ex pupil (Patrick Greensmith) who had similar recollections. These centred around your tendency to do everything at break-neck speed, including arriving in the classroom and distributing exercise books by throwing them around the room, with everyone diving in all directions, trying to catch them. We were both rolling around in tears of laughter as we remembered this chaos.
Thanks again and best regards. |

Visitor Comments: Wow, strayed across you whilst browsing Heanor Grammar School. I was a pupil there from 1966-1971 and you taught me maths in the third and part of the forth form (wasn't brilliant at it) but you got me into the top set taught by Sid Bailey.
You also taught computer progranmming for lower sixth (Fortran)in General Studies, and this gave me a grounding for later work using BASIC and Assembler Code, followed by Microsoft Windows (3,3.1,95,98,2000,NT & XP).
Vivid memories include accidentally catching you with one of the swing doors at the end of the main corridor (it was intended for Ian Hartley, but he stepped out of the way as we were supposed to do in those days when a member of the teaching staff approached) and I landed in trouble (quite rightly). By the way, how is the bruise...........?
Also remember Martin Wilde's mum making you a "Dougal" cake for your birthday - still don't know how he found out the date.
Hope you are well.

| Visitor Comments: Amazed to find my maths teacher on the web. Not that surprised though to find you are a long distance walker! You always did have a reputation for outpacing everyone! You taught me back in '77, '78. A very good teacher too, as I remember, though I probably wasn't the best of pupils. |
