| Visitor Comments: Thank you for this WONDERFUL site!!! I have been searching for information about my grandfather's service during World War II for a very long time. I know from the documents my family has that he served as a B-24 pilot with the 779th Squadron of the 464th Bombardment Group. He was shot down and injured on or just prior to July 16th, 1944 and was a POW for the remainder of the war. Like so many veterans, he prefered not to discuss his service, instead always saying "In war there are no winners, and no losers, just survivors - and I am a survivor." If anyone out there has any memories of a Joseph L. Weber from Boston, I would love to hear from you! |

Visitor Comments: My uncle, Charles Cartmille was a crew member of the "Little One", which was hit and crashed in July, 1944 on the way back from Munich, Germany. The plane went down in Yugoslavia, and all of crew members survived via parachutes. They were rescued by the Partisans. I am writing a history of this for our family records. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil Cartmille Columbus, Ohio |

Visitor Comments: My dad, Charles M. May, of Richmond, Illinois, was a B-24 pilot with the 778th. He told us stories of WWII and listed his crew: Richard Howard of California - Co-pilot Robert Johnson of Syracuse, NY - Navigator Dario Rossini of Plymouth, Wisconsin - Bombardier George Brutowski of Pennsylvania - Tail gunner Harold Seebring of California Hubert Huber of Iowa Robert Ruth (Youth?) of Ohio - top turret gunner Robert Kramer of Detroit Junior Smith of Tupelo, Mississippi.
Dad told of having their third engine knocked out by the broken wing of Black Nan, and going to Rome to record the incident on radio with the photographer of the mission. Dad received the DFC for bringing his plane back safely from that flight.
If anyone is relatives of crew members, drop me a line. mary@johnsoncentral.com

Visitor Comments: My grandfather Cpl. Frank R Pierce jr was a ball turret gunner on board a bomber in this bomber group group. The people on his plane were Lt. Charles Salivar, Lt. Harvey L'Hommedieu, Flt officer Russel Aungst, Corp. Victor Nye, Corp. Donald Harder. On either his first or second mission his plane was shot down over Yugoslavia. Half the crew landed on one side or a mountain controlled by Tito's Partisans and were quickly smuggles back to allied hands. The other half of the group landed on a side of this mountain controlled by the Chetniks(allied loosely with the nazis) who decided to help them(dressed them In Chetnik uniforms and smuggled them out in a German convoy and eventually to the allies). My grandfather was the one unlucky one who landed right in the midst of the Nazis and was taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war as a POW in Stalag Luft IV. I actually have a scrap book put together by my great grandfather (who was the president of Dearborn motors at the time) who used all his military and industrial connections to find out information about the status of his son(my grandfather). He also has all of the Correspondence between him and the spouses and parents of the other crewman on board the lost flight. There is some really great information and personal letters from the relatives of the other crewman I listed. If anyone happens to be related to then, please let me know. I have numerous original letters, pictures, telegrams, and post cards from the crew and their families. I have multiple letters from the two Lieuts detailing their adventures finally getting back to allied lines through either the partisans or the Chetniks. I would be happy to share copies with anyone related. Thanks!
