Visitor Comments: Walt, what a great site, I have been to the Plain three times this spring, twice on the bike (Husky 610) and once in the 4runner with my wife, as I only live about forty five miles away. Elkhorn is my favorite road.   Dan

The unpaved portions (about 20 miles worth in total on the West side) are washboardy everywhere, and somewhat sandy in places. Large bikes can make it, but expect to get rattled.

Terrific site. You have put a lot of effort into this. The info I needed was right here!

Can you provide any update on road conditions since the 2007 update (almost 2 years now). The photos of the unpaved Soda Lake Road suggest it is passable by a big road bike, is that true?

Thanks, Jim

Visitor Comments:

My wife, her sister and I just visited this beautiful area this weekend. We did so because we found out she inherited a five acre lot not too far from Turner Ranch. It gave us a great excuse to take a beautiful drive, which we will definitely do again.

From the looks of it these lots do not have much, if any, value. Apparently it was an effort at development that failed. There isn't much privately owned land in the area. Has the government ever requested any of this land?

Thanks,

Gary Klein

Visitor Comments: I used to live in California Valley. It is a beautiful but rugged place. Painted rock is so spiritual! I remember herds of pronhorn. There used to be a little pond close to the cafe our family would go to. They had little boats to take out in the little lake. People lived on all the ranches. I loved it there but it did get hot in the summer time. I go back every once in a while, but I like to remember it in the old days before it was a monument.

Visitor Comments: Your site inspired a trip to Carrizo with my wife last April. We live near San Jose. I did a mini-trip report posted on www.klr650.net and put a couple of photos on advrider. Have a 2002 green KLR exactly like the one in a few of your photos, although it looks like you have upgraded!

Anyway, thanks for the great work; it's appreciated!
